Why is Packing More Important for LCL?
LCL cargo undergoes more handling during transit: from factory to warehouse, warehouse consolidation, container loading/unloading, destination deconsolidation, and final door delivery. Every handling poses risks of impact and compression.
Outer Box Selection
- Use new corrugated cartons: Don't reuse old boxes — their strength is significantly reduced
- Choose double-wall corrugated board: More compression-resistant than single-wall
- No empty space inside: Cargo should be tightly packed to prevent movement
- Use wooden crates for heavy items: Recommended for cargo over 30 KG
Internal Cushioning
- Bubble wrap: Wrap fragile items for shock absorption
- Foam boards: Fill empty spaces to prevent cargo movement
- EPE foam: Ideal for electronics and precision instruments
- Paper fillers: Economical void-fill option
Waterproofing & Moisture Protection
Condensation ("container rain") can occur inside containers during ocean transit. Essential moisture protection: use moisture barrier bags or plastic film, place desiccants inside boxes, wrap cartons with stretch film, use sealed plastic bags for moisture-sensitive goods.
Labels & Markings
- Shipping Mark: Consignee name, destination port, box number
- Orientation mark: Arrows indicating "This Side Up"
- Fragile mark: Apply "Fragile" labels
- Moisture mark: Apply "Keep Dry" labels
Common Packing Mistakes
- ❌ Using shopping bags or newspaper as sole packaging
- ❌ Leaving large empty spaces inside the box
- ❌ Using tape instead of strapping for heavy items
- ❌ Skipping moisture protection
- ❌ Missing or unclear labels
